At Global Jewelers we buy all types of gold and metals. In order to determine what type of precious metal your item is, we test and examine them thoroughly. One step of this process is checking for a hallmark. Hallmarks are stamped to determine whether the item is gold, silver, or platinum. They can also identify the purity of the item, where it was made, who it was made by (designer), the year and where the metal has been tested. Hallmarks are placed on different parts of items. Another step is using a magnet or chemical agents to test whether the items are gold, silver or platinum. This is usually done when there is no mark indicating the purity.
These are the markings for gold depending on the karat:
18-karat gold is marked 750 or 18KP
10-karat gold is marked 10k, 16, 417, or 10KP
14-karat gold is marked 583, 585, or 14KP
22-karat gold is marked 916 or 917
24 karat (pure gold), is marked 999.
At Global Jewelers we have the knowledge and experience when it comes to appraising and finding the true value of watches. When you bring in your watch we will first look at its characteristics to determine the brand and authenticity. Once we have done this we will be looking at weight, engraving/typefaces, and material. When it comes to the material we will test to confirm its purity whether it be gold, silver, platinum, etc. The reason for this thorough examination is because there are many counterfeits out there nowadays. Other characteristics that we will be examining are the internal movements and sounds. The movement and sound of a watch also determines its authenticity and that it's working as it should. If your watch is broken do not worry, we are still interested in purchasing as long as its authentic!
Antique jewelry can sometimes be confused with vintage and estate jewelry. We are interested in all types, here are some facts about what differentiates all of them. Antique jewelry is any piece of jewelry that is about 100 years old or older. For jewelry to be considered vintage is has be at least 20-30 years old. Estate jewelry is any piece of jewelry that has been used. All these can be very valuable and unique. There is usually a big difference in style and value, so we make sure to thoroughly examine each piece to determine the correct value. When it comes to antique jewelry its condition is extremely important, it is basically what will determine the price of your item. The closer it is to its original condition, the more it will be worth. One important tip, is to not try and clean these pieces! If you do, you may damage its surface metals and details. Our experts will be able to see past the tarnish, so no need to clean or polish it yourself.
